Asia’s best and world’s 22nd

NUS has moved up two spots to 22nd in the world in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2018, making this its best performance since the Rankings began in 2004. The University also continues to occupy the top position in Asia, marking its third consecutive year as Asia’s best.

This year, NUS made improvements on several fronts — teaching and research reputations, research productivity, research income and research influence (citations). NUS is also among the world’s top 20 universities in research, teaching and international outlook.

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said, “We are delighted that NUS has once again been recognised among the world’s leading universities and Asia’s top university. This is a strong endorsement of the global reputation, high quality and deep impact of NUS’ education and research. The fierce commitment to excellence among our talented faculty members and students, as well as the strong support from the Singapore government, has made NUS’ continued good progress possible.”

Prof Tan added that in light of the rapid and profound changes in the nature of work, nurturing future-ready graduates and strengthening lifelong education are high priority thrusts for NUS. He added, “We will further intensify our efforts to build world-class research strengths, and to bring different disciplines together in large-scale platforms that can help develop holistic approaches to address the complex challenges that confront Singapore and the world today.”

Mr Phil Baty, Editorial Director, Global Rankings from THE congratulated NUS for achieving its highest position ever in the THE World University Rankings. “NUS has clearly established itself, against THE’s 13 rigorous and exacting performance metrics, not only as Asia’s number one university but as one of the best universities in the world — increasingly challenging the traditional elite institutions of North America and Europe.”

This year, the THE World University Rankings 2018 ranked 1,000 institutions from 77 countries based on 13 calibrated performance indicators that reflect the core missions of research-intensive universities in teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.
