Building for the tropics

The Centre for Building Energy and Sustainability in the Tropics (CiBEST) will receive close to $3 million over the next five years to strengthen its capabilities as a global leader in designing energy-efficient and sustainable buildings in the tropical climate. CiBEST is located at the NUS School of Design and Environment (SDE).

At its inauguration on 19 November, the Centre signed four Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with JTC Corporation, Keppel Land, Microsoft Singapore and S3 Innovate Pte Ltd, respectively. The MOUs will enable CiBEST to conduct joint research in the areas of data analytics software, building energy efficiency, energy management and Smart Nation.

The event, graced by Guest-of-Honour Mayor of North West District Dr Teo Ho Pin, also included a technical seminar and was attended by about 120 guests from government agencies, academic institutions and other organisations in the field of building and construction.

CiBEST, which has been operational since August 2014, has more than 30 researchers and is helmed by Co-Directors Professor Chandra Sekhar and Associate Professor David Cheong. The Centre's two research clusters are: Building Energy Efficiency, which conducts cutting-edge energy efficiency research of various building types; and Sustainable Buildings, which focuses on green and smart building materials and holistic climatic assessment of urban spaces and buildings.
