Ms Tan will begin her appointment on the NUS Board from 1 June

With effect from 1 June 2019, Ms Tan Hooi Ling, technology entrepreneur and co-founder of Grab — Southeast Asia’s leading app provider that offers a range of on-demand transport, food and package delivery services, as well as payments and financial services — will take up an appointment with the NUS Board of Trustees.

Prior to joining Grab in 2015, Ms Tan led strategic projects at the San Francisco headquarters of cloud-based customer relationship management platform Salesforce.com, and was also previously a consultant at global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. She holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from the University of Bath and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

“We warmly welcome Hooi Ling to the NUS Board of Trustees. Her expertise and experience in technology and entrepreneurship will benefit NUS immensely as we pursue our mission in education and research with a spirit of innovation and enterprise,” said Mr Hsieh Fu Hua, Chairman of the NUS Board.

Three members of the NUS Board had earlier stepped down on 31 March 2019, in line with the NUS Board renewal policy — Managing Director of investment company GK Goh Holdings Ltd Mr Goh Yew Lin, Director of EQ Insurance Company Ltd Mr Philip Tan Eng Seong, and Social Scientist and former United Nations Under-Secretary-General Dr Noeleen Heyzer.

Mr Hsieh extended deep appreciation to Mr Goh, Mr Tan and Dr Heyzer for their signification contributions and dedication towards NUS. “We are grateful and privileged to be able to draw on their continuing support as they will still be helping us in different roles within the University,” he said.

Appointed by the Minister for Education, members of the NUS Board are eminent figures from the public sector, academia, business and various professions. They work closely with the University’s management and stakeholders to shape its vision, chart major directions and guide significant initiatives.
