Medicine turns 110

Proceeds of commemorative memorabilia, which were on sale at the dinner, will go to financially needy medical students

Close to 1,000 alumni, students and guests came together for an evening of fun, food and nostalgia at the Medical Dinner 2015 on 3 July at the Raffles City Convention Centre. NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, NUS Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost Professor Tan Eng Chye and National University Health System Chief Executive Professor John Eu-Li Wong were among the guests who graced the event, which is a major highlight in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine's (NUS Medicine) calendar.

The dinner was especially significant as NUS Medicine celebrates its 110th anniversary this year. Guests were treated to a video screening which traces the medical school's humble beginnings at Sepoy Lines in 1905 and chronicled the medical journey in teaching and research. Some icons which depicted Singapore medicine, the College of Medicine and Tan Teck Guan buildings, were resurrected in the form of commemorative memorabilia. Proceeds from the sale of these items will go to financially needy medical students. A silent auction of three paintings by 2007 President's Design Award's Designer of the Year Mr Eng Siak Loy was also held.

At the event, the setting up of the Parkway Pantai Professorship in Medicine and Healthy Ageing at NUS Medicine was announced. Dato' Mohammed Azlan Bin Hashim, Chairman of Parkway Pantai Limited, and Dr Tan See Leng, Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Parkway Pantai Limited presented Prof Tan Chorh Chuan and Associate Professor Yeoh Khay Guan, Dean of NUS Medicine, with a cheque for $3 million for the Professorship.

The Professorship will provide direction and support for more extensive research into the causes, as well as prevention of neurocognitive and orthopaedic illnesses associated with ageing, such as dementia; and bone, muscle and joint disorders.

While the annual dinner traditionally gathers alumni over the years, it also welcomes this year's graduates from NUS Medicine, Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies and the NUS Department of Pharmacy into their respective professions.
