Her Excellency Mrs Akie Abe, spouse of Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, paid a visit to the NUS Department of Japanese Studies on 14 November, hosted by the Department together with the NUS Centre for Language Studies (CLS). Accompanied by Japanese delegates, including Mrs Junko Yamazaki, wife of the Japanese Ambassador to Singapore, Mrs Abe was welcomed by Head of the Department Associate Professor Thang Leng Leng before being given an overview of the NUS programmes available by Japanese Studies Associate Professor Emi Morita and CLS Associate Professor Izumi Walker. This was followed by a tea ceremony conducted by students from the NUS Sado Club and traditional musical performances by members of the NUS Koto Ensemble. Mrs Abe also met with NUS students during her visit, who excitedly took the opportunity to put their Japanese language skills to the test.
