NUS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of California (UC) on 17 February to facilitate the international exchange of ideas and to promote cooperation in academic fields of mutual interest. These include air and water quality; climate change; energy and sustainability; global food challenges; health and infectious diseases and their treatment; and sustainable transportation innovations.

The MOU, signed by NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye and UC President Janet Napolitano, extends the multi-faceted relationship between the two universities that began more than two decades ago. Both universities are involved in alliances and networks such as the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and have collaborations in education such as the Student Exchange Programme, as well as in research such as the Berkeley Education Alliance for Research in Singapore. UC is widely regarded as one of the top public university systems in the world and has more than 238,000 students and 21,200 faculty members across 10 campuses.
