The University will field Singapore's new photonics applications as part of the LUX Photonics Consortium, a new initiative announced at Techventure, a start-up conference organised by the National Research Foundation (NRF) on 21 September. Photonics can be used in fibre-optic medical devices and light-powered electronic circuits.

Two other announcements made at the conference were: the $40 million NRF Early Stage Venture Fund III to boost local companies' investment in high-tech start-ups; and the SG-UK joint test-bedding initiative, which enables start-ups from both countries to pilot and demonstrate technologies for future cities in areas such as mobility and water.
