A pledge of unity

A sea of red and white filled University Hall on 8 August as more than 300 patriotic NUS faculty, staff, students and alumni came together as one for the annual National Day Observance Ceremony in commemoration of Singapore’s 52nd birthday.

Reciting the National Pledge

Raising the Singapore flag this year was Mr Gian Yen Berg (NUS Arts and Social Sciences ’15). Mr Gian was joined by Ms Marie Eber from NUS Corporate Relations and Year 2 NUS Science student Nur Amirah Binte Syed Hussain who raised the NUS flags, while the NUS Choir led the crowd in a warm rendition of the National Anthem. Rounding out the ceremony was a recitation of the National Pledge, led by Vice President of the 38th NUSSU Executive Committee Ong Zhang Yao.

“It is a great honour to lead the NUS community in reciting the pledge. It brings back fond memories of primary and secondary school days when we would recite the pledge each morning. I feel very proud to be a Singaporean,” said Zhang Yao.
