Pro bono work matters

The NUS Faculty of Law (NUS Law) started a new legal clinic module which evaluated students on how they helped migrant workers on legal issues, instead of assessing them through written examinations.

Conducted from July to November last year, the first such module in Singapore saw NUS students undertaking work such as explaining salary claims and assisting a qualified lawyer to defend a worker in court. During the semester, the students worked with about 10 clients at legal clinics run by non-governmental organisations and their efforts were assessed by their professors.

The unique module was established by Assistant Professor Jaclyn Neo and Ms Sheila Hayre to cater to the many Law students keen on doing pro bono work.
