Public service commendation
Singapore paid tribute to the unstinting public service efforts of NUS Eminent Alumnus Mr Suppiah Dhanabalan, Chairman of the NUS Business School Management Advisory Board, NUS Pro-Chancellor Mr Stephen Lee, NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, among other faculty and staff during the country's Golden Jubilee National Day.
Mr Dhanabalan, Director, Board of GIC Private Limited; Member, Council of Presidential Advisers; Member, Presidential Council for Minority Rights; and Member, Temasek Trust Board of Trustees, was awarded the Order of Temasek (1st Class), the only one to be honoured with the award this year.
Mr Lee was the sole recipient of the Order of Nila Utama (1st Class) this year. A prominent business leader, Mr Lee was appointed as NUS Pro-Chancellor from 29 April 2015. Contributing significantly to both the public and private sectors, Mr Lee is Chairman of Singapore Airlines, SIA Engineering, and NTUC Income Insurance. He is Senior International Advisor of Temasek International Advisory and Member of the National Wages Council as well, and sits on the Council of Presidential Advisers.
Prof Tan was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal at the National Day Awards this year. NUS President since 2008, Prof Tan is also Chairman, Board of the National University Health System; Deputy Chairman, Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research; Senior Advisor, Governing Board of Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School; and Member, Board of Directors, Monetary Authority of Singapore. Prof Tan has previously received the Public Service Star in 2003 for his outstanding contributions to overcoming SARS in Singapore, and the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 2004 for his work as Director of Medical Services in the Ministry of Health.
Two members of the NUS Board of Trustees were also honoured. Mdm Kay Kuok, Chairman, Board of Directors, National Healthcare Group was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal while Mr Lucas Chow, Chairman, Health Promotion Board, received the Public Service Medal. Mr Paul Ma, a former NUS Board Member and currently a co-opted member of the NUS Board of Trustees Audit Committee, was also conferred the Public Service Medal.
Mr Gopinath Pillai, Executive Chairman, NUS Institute of South Asian Studies, and Ambassador-at-Large and Special Envoy to Andhra Pradesh, Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs, received the Meritorious Service Medal. Professor Brenda Yeoh, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was conferred the Public Administration Medal (Silver).
Professor John Eu-Li Wong, Senior Vice President (Health Affairs) and Isabel Chan Professor in Medical Sciences; Associate Professor Grace Ong, Dean, Faculty of Dentistry; and Associate Professor Yeoh Khay Guan, Dean, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine received the Long Service Medal.
