Tiny camera captures big money

Young start-up TinyMOS, founded by three enterprising NUS alumni, received strong support for their pocket-sized camera when their crowdsourcing effort hit their goal of US$100,000 in less than four hours.

TinyMOS created Tiny1, a pocket-sized camera which delivers sharp pictures of celestial bodies. The company was set up in early 2014 by Mr Grey Tan, Chief Executive Officer; Mr Ashprit Singh Arora, Chief Operating Officer; and Mr Chia Lih Wei, Chief Technology Officer.

When asked about the rapid positive response to their fundraising, Mr Tan said, “It is a good result considering the niche market we are targeting and we are very excited. It takes some time before the market understands our product, compared to more ‘hot’ crowdfunding areas such as drones and VR (virtual reality). This has given us a strong sign and confidence that we are heading in the right way and that the market can be expanded with enough effort.”

Mr Tan shared that it was the company’s vision to create a larger astronomy community by promoting exploration of space and astronomy from the ground up; that is, by individuals rather than large organisations. To this end, Tiny1 is the first in a series of planned products and accessories that aims to open up the field of astronomy to everyone, he added.
