‘China waiting in wings’ as US disengages

Speaking on the topic of “Shocks and Shifts in Global Finance: Implications for Asia” at the Tolani-NUS Business School Public Lecture, Prof Eswar Prasad of Cornell University noted that China could gradually take over the leadership role in shaping the international economic order if the US continues its withdrawal from the global stage, as peripheral countries will have little choice in the power shift process. He also opined that regional countries will likely accept China’s rise to the top and while the transition may look peaceful on the surface, there is bound to be tension underneath that may emerge any time.
