Is data analytics about causes or correlations?

Assoc Prof Goh Khim Yong from NUS School of Computing opined that many current data analytics efforts in both academia and industry focus on deriving correlational insights from large data sets which, while useful, have their pitfalls. He shared on his preferred research approach in data analytics which is to use a randomised field experimentation method without control-treatment groups of data samples.
