Outbreaks of diseases make us exaggerate or underestimate risks

Prof Koh Chan Ghee, Director; Prof Leonard Lee, Deputy Director; and Dr Catherine Wong, Research Fellow from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk at NUS, discussed how in times of emergency, it is difficult to have a clear understanding of the risks involved and how to respond appropriately because of the myriad uncertainties. They opined that the public needs to be mindful not to be vectors of misinformation, distrust, and anti-social behaviour.
