The pitfalls of China’s urban sprawl

Prof Zheng Yongnian, Director of the East Asian Institute at NUS, noted that China has attained 56 per cent urbanisation from the initial 38 per cent when it started reforms more than 30 years ago. He shared that despite this rapid achievement, there appears to be a loss of momentum in the urbanisation process in recent years, one key reason being poor management by officials.
