Rise of ‘pan-halal’ trend in China

Dr Shan Wei, Research Fellow and Mr Ryan Ho, Research Asst, both from the East Asian Institute at NUS discussed the rise of the ‘pan-halal’ trend in China, whereby food and services which were traditionally non-halal are now becoming halal and has sparked an online debate amongst the mostly Han Chinese population. They also opined that ‘Islamophobia’ in China is a reality and amid other reasons, it is caused by terrorist attacks and ethnic violence related to Uighur Muslims, which have created negative sentiments towards the Islamic community in China.
