Singapore to mark 200th anniversary of Raffles’ arrival

This was a report on plans for the nation to mark the 200th anniversary of 1819 when Sir Stamford Raffles first arrived in Singapore, as highlighted in Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s New Year message. Professor Tan Tai Yong, President of Yale-NUS College, who sits on the Singapore bicentennial advisory panel, shared that the bicentennial commemoration in 2019 will be a reflective attempt to understand the “full essence and complexity” of events in Singapore’s 700-year history.
