Published by NUS Press, the book Sovereign Women in a Muslim Kingdom by Asst Prof Sher Banu A.L. Khan from the Dept of Malay Studies in NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, explores in detail the sultanahs who ruled the kingdom of Aceh for half of the 17th century, demonstrating how female rule was legitimised by Islam and indigenous adat laws.
