Why does China want to avoid the “destiny” of a large nation?

Prof Zheng Yongnian, Director of the East Asian Institute at NUS pointed out there have been radical changes to international geopolitics and that China is well-placed to seize this opportunity to re-shape the regional or international order. He opined that China appears to be avoiding its “destiny” of a large country and this could hinder its progress in becoming a true world power.
