NUS Dentistry stages comedy show to raise funds for oral health care

“Oral Humour – The Show with Bite” to feature top local talent and NUS alumni in an original script

The National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Dentistry, the country’s only dental school, is organising a fundraising show titled Oral Humour – The Show with Bite on 28 August 2016 at the Esplanade, to raise funds in support of education, research, and clinical programmes at the new National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (NUCOHS).

Oral HumourThe Show with Bite is a comedy variety show produced by Ms Andrea Teo, who is best known for creating TV comedy hits such as Under One Roof and Phua Chu Kang. The show will feature well-known local comedians and celebrities such as Mr Hossan Leong, Ms Koh Chieng Mun, Mr Sebastian Tan and other local talents, as well as special performances by NUS alumni.

Raising funds for dental education and research, as well as oral health care

NUCOHS is a new oral health care facility located at the NUS Kent Ridge campus. It will bring dental education, oral health research and clinical services all under one roof to synergise the delivery of oral health care and drive new breakthroughs in dentistry. The prevention of oral diseases and maintenance of good oral health across the lifespan will contribute to improved quality of life for the population. This new state-of-the-art oral health centre, slated to be completed in 2019, is committed towards this mission. When fully operational, NUCOHS will have the capacity to attend to 40 per cent more patients a day. It will also be equipped with facilities for patients with complex medical conditions, mobility impairments, and patients with special needs. The centre will also house the NUS Faculty of Dentistry, which will have expanded facilities enabling it to increase its annual undergraduate intake, from 54 currently to 80 students by 2021.

NUS Dentistry has teamed up with local artistes to not only inject a little fun and humour into the topic of oral health, but also to raise funds to support various programmes at NUCOHS. The proceeds from the show will go towards supporting oral health care innovation and research, as well as oral health care programmes for elderly patients and those with special needs in our community. It will also help to provide financial aid to support needy students pursuing dentistry at NUS, as well as enable enhancements to facilities for dental education, research and clinical services at NUS.

Professor Patrick Finbarr Allen, Dean of NUS Dentistry and Chairman of the fundraising organising committee, said, “When completed, the NUCOHS will be integral to our efforts at NUS Dentistry to transform dentistry and bring oral health care closer to the community. Support for Oral Humour – The Show with Bite will enable us to train the next generation of oral health care professionals, increase access of oral health care services for the vulnerable, and drive clinical excellence and oral health care innovation through research. NUS Dentistry is proud to be leading this noble cause and we look forward to generous contributions from our friends and supporters as we embark on this critical mission.”
