Since 2000, NUS students have raised more than S$7 million in donations for its beneficiaries through the annual NUSSU Flag Day. For their efforts, they had been receiving the Community Chest Special Events Gold or Platinum Awards on an annual basis since 2003.

A tradition which began in the late 1950s, Rag and Flag is a signature NUS event where NUS students – freshmen and seniors – from different Halls of Residence, Faculties and Schools bond over months of intensive preparations.

During Flag Day 2016, which was held on 2 August 2016, about 7,000 NUS students visited various parts of Singapore to raise funds from members of the public.

As a show of appreciation to the public for their contributions to the less privileged, NUS students put up well-choreographed, dazzling performances on Rag Day, which was held on 6 August 2016. Themed “Big World, Bigger Dreams”, the event featured colourful props creatively constructed by NUS students using recycled materials, coupled with stunning dance performances, in celebration of the diversity and vibrancy of the NUS community.

NUSSU President Mr Loo Weng Heng said, “Participating in Rag and Flag is a rite of passage for all NUS freshmen, which brings camaraderie to the fore, as they work together to help the less privileged in our community. This experience will serve to foster teamwork, empathy and compassion among our fellow students. I would like to thank all participants of this year’s Rag and Flag for their unwavering support."
