NUS is top Asian university and 24th in the world in latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings

The National University of Singapore (NUS) has climbed two notches to the 24th spot in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2016-2017, achieving its best performance in the rankings to date. It is also the top Asian university for the second year running in the annual rankings, and the only Asian university that joined the world’s top 25 this year.

This year, THE has published an expanded World University Rankings comprising a list of top 980 universities from 79 countries, which represents about 5 per cent of the world’s higher education institutions. This includes 289 Asian universities from 24 countries, and of which 19 Asian universities are in the top 200 of the rankings. It employs 13 calibrated performance indicators to reflect a university’s strengths in five areas that represent the core missions of research intensive universities: Teaching, Research, Citations, International Outlook and Industry Income.

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said, “We are pleased that NUS continues to do well in global university rankings, in particular to advance two places to 24th worldwide and maintain our position as Asia’s top university in the latest THE World University Rankings. NUS will continue to focus on nurturing future-ready graduates, pursuing research excellence, and creating strong translational impact and real-world value from our research.”

Mr Phil Baty, Editor of Times Higher Education World University Rankings, said, “Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings are the most comprehensive and the most robust global university rankings. They employ 13 separate performance indicators across the full range of a university’s core missions, including teaching, research and knowledge transfer, and all data and calculations are subjected to rigorous independent audit by the professional services firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers.

It is with great pleasure that I can confirm that once again that the data clearly demonstrates that National University of Singapore is the number one university in Asia. The fact that NUS has been able to strengthen its leading position, and move closer to the very top of the table, is testament to its extraordinary leadership and vision, backed by a commitment to true internationalisation and serious investment and support from Government.”
