Bursary assists financially needy medical students

Financially needy students at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine can look forward to further support for their studies with the establishment of the new OncoCare Medical Bursary that will be available from August 2015.

Established by medical oncologist Dr Tay Miah Hiang, who is the Founding Director of OncoCare Cancer Centre, the Bursary is a way to give back to the University while celebrating Singapore's 50th anniversary. Dr Tay, an NUS Medicine alumnus, was himself an undergraduate bursary recipient and understands the value such assistance can offer to those in need. "We hope the students who are helped by this will in turn be inspired and encouraged, and remember to step forward to help those less fortunate one day, he said.

The new medical undergraduate bursary will relieve the burden of many of the 300 students admitted annually to the School. This would offer them the freedom to focus on their studies and pursue their dreams, said Associate Professor Yeoh Khay Guan, Dean of the School. The Centre has pledged a sum of $750,000 over five years.
