How do we escape the air-conditioning trap?
As temperatures rise due to global warming, people instinctively switch on their air-conditioners to lower indoor temperatures. Ironically, this in turn accelerates global warming as air-conditioners drain energy and release greenhouse gases – a vicious cycle.
Professor Khoo Teng Chye from the Department of Architecture under the College of Design and Engineering at NUS, who is also Senior Advisor of NUS Cities, emphasised the need for change, and shared that smarter building designs, innovating the technology of air-conditioning, and changing people’s habits can help us to break out of the vicious cycle and escape the air-conditioning trap.
