From 'mid-stream' to 'down-stream'

Assoc Prof Thang Leng Leng from the Dept of Japanese Studies at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences observed that the Japanese word ‘karyuu’, which in Chinese characters refer to ‘low-class’, does not have a negative implication in Japan and has been used to describe disadvantaged individuals in society.
