Global top 20 in four subjects
The latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by subject saw NUS ranked among the world’s top 20 in four subjects — Business and Economics; Computer Science; Engineering and Technology; and Physical Sciences. NUS was also ranked 8th in the world for Engineering and Technology.
The University also improved its performance in the fields of Arts and Humanities; Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health; Life Sciences; and Social Sciences.
“We are pleased by NUS’ strong performance in the Times Higher Education World University subject rankings. It is a true testament to the deep expertise and unwavering dedication of our talented faculty and students in the pursuit of excellence,” said Professor Tan Eng Chye, NUS Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost.
“We will continue to focus our efforts on building world-class strengths through education innovation and high-impact research, in order to nurture future-ready graduates with the ability to soar in a rapidly changing world beyond the university doors while helping to solve complex societal challenges in Singapore and the world,” added Prof Tan.
Mr Phil Baty, Editorial Director of Global Rankings at THE, noted the rise of Asian universities in the field of Engineering and Technology, with the continent having more world-class institutions in the top 500 than North America. Among the “stand-out performers”, NUS and China’s Peking University were the only Asian universities to make it to the world’s top 10 in the subject.
The THE subject rankings employ the same 13 performance indicators used in the overall World University Rankings 2018 that reflect the core missions of research-intensive universities in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook, though the methodology has been recalibrated to suit individual fields.
NUS has been placed among the top 100 universities in the world for the following subject areas:
