Greater inclusion will boost resilience to disasters

Prof Vinod Thomas, Visiting Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS opined that inclusive growth and greater income equality will help build stronger resilience to catastrophes such as the COVID-19 pandemic. He cited the United States, India and Singapore as examples of countries with varying but relatively high inequality of income, and suggested that investing more in capabilities of low-income groups – and channelling this spending beyond enhancing safety nets – should be part of the policy mix to revive economies.
