High car prices may spur owners to drive more, not less

Prof Ivan Png, Distinguished Prof at NUS Business School and Dept of Economics at NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, conducted a study with Prof Ho Teck Hua at NUS Business School and Asst Prof Sadat Reza at NTU, and found that surging car prices stimulated more driving among car owners. He opined that the new Global Positioning System to be implemented in 2020 to vary the amount drivers pay based on distance, time, location and vehicle will encourage people to consider other routes or alternative means of transport.
