NUS, Deltares partner for urban resilience

NUS and Dutch applied research institute Deltares signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 24 November to formally launch the development of a new Singapore Centre on Urban Resilience (SeCURE). The initiative will use big data and adopt a holistic systems approach to address urban resilience challenges — such as climate change induced flooding and drought — in Southeast Asia, a “global hotspot for water insecurity”.

The MoU was signed by NUSDeltares Director Professor Wong Sek Man and Deltares CEO Mr Maarten Smits at the Raffles Hotel. It was witnessed by Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mr Mark Rutte and Singapore Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Mr Masagos Zulkifli.

“NUS has a longstanding partnership with Deltares through the NUSDeltares Alliance, which is a unique collaboration to address some of the most pressing water and soil issues confronting the world today. SeCURE is a natural step forward for NUS and Deltares to leverage on our experience and expertise to co-create innovative solutions to address real-world challenges that are unique to Southeast Asia,” said Prof Wong.
