NUS to set up research institute in Chongqing

NUS has signed a Strategic Framework Agreement with the Chongqing Liangjiang New Area Administrative Committee (LJNAAC) to jointly establish the NUS (Chongqing) Research Institute (NUSRI@CQ), the University’s second research institute based in China. The agreement was signed on 20 September by NUS Senior Deputy President and Provost Professor Ho Teck Hua and Chongqing Liangjiang New Area Working Committee Deputy Secretary and Chongqing LJNAAC Executive Deputy Director Mr Tang Zongwei during the 14th Singapore-China Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation meeting in Singapore co-chaired by Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean and Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng.

NUSRI@CQ is expected to conduct research in four key areas: modern logistics, finance and financial risk management, information engineering and technology, and advanced manufacturing and materials. It will also carry out incubation, entrepreneurship and innovation-related activities and contribute towards Liangjiang’s development of scientific and innovative enterprises. 

In addition, the Institute will work with partners to offer executive training and education programmes in selected areas to meet the needs of Chongqing and other major cities in western China. NUS will also partner institutions of higher learning in Chongqing in areas such as nurturing doctoral and post-doctoral research talents. 

These activities will serve to strengthen Sino-Singapore cooperation in western China. 

Prof Ho said that NUS was deeply honoured to partner LJNAAC in setting up NUSRI@CQ and looked forward to the great opportunities for collaboration. “Situated in one of the fastest-growing cities in China, this new research institute will build on the complementary strengths of NUS and LJNACC to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes in areas such as education, innovation, and technology entrepreneurship. It will also serve as an important gateway for NUS to extend our reach in the western region of China,” he said.
