Law Dean on UN University Council

Prof Chesterman will assume his role as one of the new UNU Council members on 3 May

NUS Law Dean Professor Simon Chesterman will assume his role as one of 12 new members of the governing United Nations University (UNU) Council on 3 May. The new appointees will serve for terms of either three or six years. The appointments, announced in New York on 27 April, were made by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon and UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization Director-General Irina Bokova.

Prof Chesterman said, “I am delighted to be one of the five men and seven women on the UNU Council, supporting UNU's mission to serve as a think tank for the UN and build capacity worldwide to address global challenges. As someone who has spent most of his professional life researching international law and institutions, this is a modest opportunity to give back and help improve those institutions for the benefit of all.”

The Council’s main functions are to formulate the UNU’s principles and policies, govern its operations, and consider and approve its biennial budget and work programme. Those appointed serve in their individual capacity. They were selected with the goal of achieving a geographic and gender balance, with due regard for major academic, scientific, educational and cultural trends; as well as each member’s field of expertise.
