More ‘generalist’ doctors needed for S’pore, say med school deans

On the sidelines of the Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine in July 2017, Assoc Prof Yeoh Khay Guan, Dean of the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine shared that Singapore needs more doctors who are “generalists” rather than specialists. This does not necessarily mean just general practitioners, but also those trained in family medicine, and geriatric and palliative care. Prof Thomas Coffman, Dean of the Duke-NUS Medical School, suggested that one way of getting medical students more interested in the general disciplines is through giving them role models to emulate.
