New app for career planning

The career+ app leverages an AI engine co-developed by NUS Computer Science and allows NUS students to create a customised learning journey to bring them closer to their dream job

NUS undergraduates have a new tool at their disposal that allows them to create a customised learning journey to bring them closer to their dream job.

The new career+ app, available on both iOS and Android platforms, generates smart customised module recommendations based on an individual student’s career interest and course of study. Academic modules are prioritised, helping students to acquire highly sought after skills in specific career domains based on real-time analysis of the skills required in the Singapore job market.

The app also suggests possible career domains for students based on their degree and evolving market trends, as well as recommended job applications leveraging the skills that they have acquired from their academic modules. In addition, students are able to update the app with skills that they have picked up from activities and experiences outside of the classroom, providing them with a convenient and holistic view of their learning.

NUS career+ is a unique tool that leverages AI and big data to help our students align their learning journeys with their career aspirations. The goal is for every student to acquire highly coveted skills that would give an advantage in getting a dream job upon graduation.

A personalised skills profile will be generated with a status bar charting their level of readiness for up to three selected career domains.

The mobile app makes use of an artificial intelligence (AI) engine jointly developed by NUS Computer Science and JobTech, and supported by AI Singapore.

Professor Ho Teck Hua, NUS Senior Deputy President and Provost, said, “At NUS, students are at the centre of everything we do. We want to help our students pursue their dream careers, and we want them to make smart choices along the way. To do this, education and career planning must go hand in hand. NUS career+ is a unique tool that leverages AI and big data to help our students align their learning journeys with their career aspirations. The goal is for every student to acquire highly coveted skills that would give an advantage in getting a dream job upon graduation.”

Some 2,800 NUS Computing undergraduates are the first to try out the career+ mobile app, which will be rolled out progressively to undergraduates across NUS’ various schools and faculties, and eventually to NUS alumni who take up Continuing Education and Training courses at the University. There are also plans to develop a more advanced version of the app to assist with job applications through the automatic generation of a customised skills-based resume.

The mobile app complements the comprehensive suite of career resources offered by the University, such as career preparation courses and events by the Centre for Future-ready Graduates as well as guidance by faculty-based career advisors.
