NUS appoints three new members to its Board of Trustees
The National University of Singapore (NUS) today announced the appointment of three new members to its Board of Trustees for terms beginning on 1 April 2016. The new members are: Mr Loh Chin Hua, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, Keppel Corporation Limited; Dr Leslie Teo, Chief Economist and Director, Economics & Investment Strategy, GIC Private Limited; and Mr Wong Fong Fui, Chairman and Group Chief Executive Officer, Boustead Singapore Ltd.
Two members of the NUS Board of Trustees - Mr Hans-Dieter Bott, former Managing Director, Siemens Pte Ltd and former President, Singaporean-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce; and Ms Chan Chia Lin, Director, Holywell Pte Ltd - stepped down on 31 March 2016. Mr Han Fook Kwang, Editor-at-Large, The Straits Times, Singapore Press Holdings Limited, had earlier stepped down from the Board on 31 December 2015.
Mr Wong Ngit Liong, Chairman of the NUS Board, said, “Chin Hua, Leslie and Fong Fui are outstanding leaders in their fields - NUS is indeed privileged to welcome them to our Board. The University will benefit greatly from their global experience and expertise as we strive to excel as global university in a rapidly changing higher education landscape, and to differentiate ourselves by making a deep impact through research excellence. We are also very grateful to Hans, Chia Lin and Fook Kwang for their leadership, foresight and support.”
2016 also marks the 10th year of NUS’ corporatisation. In 2006, NUS became a corporatised, autonomous university that is able to exercise greater flexibility to make far-reaching changes to create a unique educational experience for students, as well as compete globally.
“Over the past decade, the greater autonomy and strong support from the government has allowed NUS to position itself strategically, and devote resources to new initiatives and distinctive programmes. NUS today is a thriving community comprising many of the brightest students in Singapore, with some of the best faculty and researchers in their fields. The University’s strong performance in the latest 2016 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject - which placed NUS among the world’s 10 best universities for 13 subjects and Asia’s best across 25 subjects - is testament to the progress that NUS has achieved in the last 10 years,” added Mr Wong.
The NUS Board of Trustees comprises 24 members appointed by the Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills), and is chaired by Mr Wong Ngit Liong, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Venture Corporation Limited. The Board comprises eminent business leaders, academics, entrepreneurs, and professionals from the public service and private sectors. Members are appointed on the strength of their caliber, experience, stature, ability to contribute to the oversight and development of the University, as well as strategic networking relationships they bring which are of strategic importance to the University.
The Board works closely with the management and stakeholders of the University to shape the vision, chart the major directions, and development programmes and initiatives to produce a strong and enduring impact for the University, and for Singapore and beyond.
