NUS, CFLD partner for smart cities

In conjunction with the setting up of its global headquarters in Singapore, the international arm of leading new industry city (NIC) developer China Fortune Land Development (CFLD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NUS Business Analytics Centre (BAC) — a partnership between NUS Business and NUS Computing — on 17 March to drive innovation and leverage business analytics research to address smart city industry challenges. The University is CFLD’s first international education partner.

The three-year partnership between CFLD International and NUS BAC aims to boost academic research and educational training with real-time and practical applications within the NIC sector.

“We are very excited to partner NUS, a leading international education provider, to tackle specific social challenges and drive economic growth in activities related to the development of new industry cities throughout the region,” said Mr Jerry Zhao, CFLD International President.

As part of the CFLD Milestone Project Series, CFLD International will provide funding to support creative proposals that tackle social challenges and drive economic growth in activities related to NIC development.

“With the massive amount of data being generated by people and organisations today, businesses will reap immense benefits by leveraging on tools and technologies to interpret this invaluable repository of information. In this regard, the CFLD Milestone Project Series will boost the efforts of NUS BAC and CFLD in advancing research in big data, business analytics and smart cities technology to address the urban challenges tackled by the smart cities industry,” said Dean of NUS Computing Professor Mohan Kankanhalli.

To groom industry talent, CFLD International has also committed to awarding scholarships to NUS Master of Science in Business Analytics students. Additionally, the company plans to introduce a three-month CFLD Business Analytics Capstone Internship Programme with the chance to work in CFLD International offices overseas and gain hands-on experience in NIC development issues using business analytics. It will also conduct joint seminars on topics relating to big data, business analytics and innovative information technologies.

Professor Bernard Yeung, Dean of NUS Business said, “It is important that our students have the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to real-life issues. With a volatile and competitive business landscape, enhanced experiential learning and career development is the cornerstone of our students’ development and success during their time with NUS Business School. Our partnership with CFLD will definitely elevate our students’ exposure, and prepare them for meaningful career aspirations even after graduation.”
