NUS, Scripps partner on ocean research

NUS inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with University of California (UC), San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) on 20 May, charting the way forward for collaboration in ocean research and development.

Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professor Ho Teck Hua, who is NUS Deputy President (Research and Technology) and Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum Head Professor Peter Ng signed the MOU with SIO Director and UC San Diego's Vice-Chancellor for Marine Sciences Dr Margaret Leinen and Emeritus Professor with UC San Diego’s Marine Biology Research Division Dr Lanna Cheng.

The alliance will see NUS and SIO joining forces on general and interdisciplinary research on marine biodiversity, ecology and environment science, as well as oceanography and climate change. Particular focus will be given to ocean circulation modelling, hydrodynamics, coastal productivity and algal blooms. Researchers from both universities will also look into marine biotechnology, coastal engineering and underwater acoustics.
