NUS Team Bumblebee crowned champion of RoboSub 2025

Following a one-year hiatus, NUS Team Bumblebee made a strong return to RoboSub 2025, reclaiming the championship title. The team had previously clinched its first championship in 2022 and successfully retained the top place in 2023.

Held from 11 to 17 August 2025 at the William Woollett Jr Aquatics Center in the City of Irvine in California, USA, RoboSub is a global competition that challenges teams to tackle real-world underwater robotics problems – from oceanographic exploration and mapping to object detection and manipulation. This year’s event brought together 58 teams from across the globe.

Team Bumblebee took a break from last year’s edition of RoboSub to focus on the Maritime RobotX Challenge, another international competition that advances autonomous robotic systems in the maritime domain. This year, the NUS team returned to RoboSub 2025 amid a record number of contenders, including Duke University, San Diego State University and Arizona State University – all of which were also finalists in this year’s competition.

After a week of intense competition – featuring technical presentations to judges and multiple rounds of pool testing - Team Bumblebee emerged as the overall champion and also swept awards for design documentation, namely Top Website, Top Video, Top Report and Top Assessment.

Team Lead Leong Deng Jun, Year 4 Computer Engineering undergraduate, reflected on the team’s effort, “I am very proud of what the team has achieved at this RoboSub. This year’s competition was especially challenging with a record number of teams participating. Many teams came better prepared, which meant we had limited testing time in the competition arena. Despite some unexpected setbacks and hardware issues, every member of our team stepped up and contributed to this victory.”

Based at the College of Design and Engineering in NUS, Team Bumblebee is a student-run multidisciplinary project comprising 55 undergraduates from Mechanical, Computer, and Electrical Engineering as well as NUS School of Computing, NUS Business School, and NUS College of Humanities and Sciences.
