Prof Lo Hoi Kwong honoured with Leonard Mandel Quantum Optics Award 2026
Professor Lo Hoi Kwong from the Centre of Quantum Technologies (CQT) and Department of Physics in the Faculty of Science at NUS has been conferred the Leonard Mandel Quantum Optics Award 2026 by Optica, a society dedicated to promoting the generation, application, archiving and dissemination of knowledge in the field of optics and photonics.
Established in 2023, the award commemorates Leonard Mandel for his seminal contributions to the field of quantum optics and for advancing our understanding of the quantum aspects of light. Prof Lo received this award in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the applications of quantum optics, quantum information science, including the invention of decoy-state quantum key distribution (QKD), measurement-device-independent QKD, and all-photonic quantum repeater.
A Provost’s Chair Professor in the Department of Physics and a Principal Investigator in CQT, Prof Lo specialises in quantum information science including quantum cryptography and quantum communication. Prof Lo’s research group was the first to experimentally demonstrate the decoy-state protocol and successfully hacked a commercial QKD system. For his work, he has received numerous prestigious awards and fellowships from Optica, the American Physical Society (APS) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
