R-16, Asia's best at FSAE challenge

Despite hail and freezing temperatures, NUS Engineering students and their new and improved R-16 race car was Asia’s best entry at the recent Formula SAE challenge in Michigan, US. It ranked an impressive 12th worldwide, and was also crowned World Champion for Marketing Presentation.

In a powerful display of creativity and technical ability, the team also came in 8th for Engineering Design and 9th for Engineering Design Drawing. Project supervisor Professor Seah Kar Heng shared that the Formula SAE was not just a car race but also “a test of how our students and staff handle emergencies under near-impossible situations”.  

“The whole experience has taught me to adopt a spirit of ingenuity amidst competition, to persevere despite unexpected obstacles. It's also shown me that amazing things can come from a team working towards one unified goal. The sacrifice and hard work was worth it for the life lessons learnt,” said Team Leader and Year 4 Mechanical Engineering student Dominic Lim.

The competition, which saw 120 university teams across the globe pitting their engineering and racing skills against each other, ended on 14 May after four gruelling days.
