Seen and heard this week

Seen and heard this week is a weekly column highlighting thought leadership from the NUS community

Assistant Professor Joelle Fong at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS, together with her collaborator at the Singapore Management University discussed the upcoming CPF Life Retirement Investment Scheme in an opinion piece published in The Business Times on 11 April. She said that the new scheme would offer CPF members low-cost, passively managed funds, and enable members to set the investment of their CPF savings on autopilot.

A commentary published in TODAY on 12 April carried the views on Singapore’s urban future shared by Dr Cheong Koon Hean, NUS Board Member and CEO of the Housing Development Board at the IPS-Nathan lecture organised by the Institute of Policy Studies at NUS. She highlighted that a small island city-state like Singapore should work towards three important principles in its infrastructure provision — favour a circular model; adopt an integrated multifunction system as well as build resilient and intelligent urban infrastructure.

On the research front, Assistant Professor Chris Lok To Sham from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at NUS Medicine carried out an experiment with Channel NewsAsia to help readers visualise the amount of bacteria that could reside on one’s hand. The findings reported on 15 April uncovered the different types of bacteria present as a result of the different surfaces in which the hand comes into contact with.
