Seen and heard this week

On 18 October, Professor Andrew Delios, Head of Department of Strategy and Policy at NUS Business School, wrote in The Straits Times about the influx of bike-sharing schemes and suggested that regulating the industry will protect its growth while stemming costs for third parties.

Dr Neo Yu Wei, Research Fellow at the Social Service Research Centre at NUS Arts and Social Sciences, and Assistant Professor Ng Kok Hoe from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, shared their observations and findings from a street survey conducted by a group of social workers and volunteers on the homeless in Singapore. Read their 18 October commentary in TODAY to learn more about the plight of the homeless and consider the authors’ suggestion to “reflect on the lived realities of homelessness and the lack of meaningful choices available to people in poverty”.

On 21 October, TODAY reported on two studies that will monitor marine trash in Singapore and unearth the extent of microplastic pollution here. Find out from NUS’ experts such as Mr N Sivasothi from NUS Biological Sciences, who leads the annual International Coastal Cleanup, Singapore; Dr Suresh Valiyaveettil from NUS Chemistry, who specialises in materials chemistry; and Dr Serena Teo, deputy director of research at the Tropical Marine Science Institute; who each share their views on marine trash monitoring and what more Singapore could do for sustainability.
