Support from peers can reduce depression in new mothers

A recent study led by Assistant Professor Shefaly Shorey of the NUS Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies has shown that peer support from trained volunteers using mobile technology can help new mothers who are at risk of postpartum depression. Asst Prof Shorey and her team are conducting a new trial to look into the long-term effects on maternal outcomes, and the cost-effectiveness of implementing a large-scale peer volunteer programme using a mobile app.
