Besides respiratory discharges, the COVID-19 virus can be found in the stool of infected individuals, including those with mild or no symptoms, prompting the need for wastewater testing of the virus to provide an indication of COVID-19 transmission in the community.

Wastewater monitoring, which gained prominence during COVID-19, allows early detection of diseases by analysing sewage, helping to identify hotspots and assess public health interventions. This method provides an effective and non-invasive way to globally track other viruses, such as polio and Zika for community-wide transmission monitoring. Associate Professor Vincent Pang Junxiong at the Duke-NUS Medical School’s Centre for Outbreak Preparedness highlighted that while it can't replace clinical surveillance, wastewater analysis is a vital tool for early outbreak detection and public health strategy, underscoring the need for community support and sustained implementation.
