When seniors live alone, it doesn’t mean they are lonely

Solo-dwelling elderly are commonly assumed to be lonely and regarded as “at risk”. However, a study conducted by Associate Professor Vincent Chua, Professor Elaine Ho Lynn-Ee and Associate Professor Feng Chen-Chieh from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at NUS, debunked the assumption, revealing that many Singaporean seniors who live alone are in fact, socially active.

Since resources and support measures tend to be targeted at seniors living alone, the NUS professors cautioned that these efforts may be misdirected. They further elaborated on the policy implications of their study’s findings and suggested better indicators to uncover disconnected seniors.
