Why it is difficult for Japan to be heavily involved in the South China Sea dispute

Assoc Prof Zhang Yun from the East Asian Institute at NUS opined that Japan, which is not a claimant state to the South China Sea, has chosen to be involved in the issue mostly due to political considerations rather than actual security and military concerns. He noted that it remains to be seen how this would affect its relations with China.
