Artificial skin that feels, responds

President’s Assistant Professor Benjamin Tee from NUS Materials Science & Engineering is a specialist in biotechnology. Inspired by the scene in the Star Wars movie where Luke Skywalker is fitted with a prosthetic arm that can feel and respond to touch, Asst Prof Tee set out to transform science fiction to reality.

The Tee Research Group that Asst Prof Tee oversees has developed a platform technology that can enable sensors to be built on any scale needed and is now working on what he terms “the most advanced electronic skin”. In an interview with CNN, Asst Prof Tee suggests that there is a possibility of engineering the skin to be able to heal itself and reduce the time required for it to respond to a stimulus.
