Prof Andrew Wee takes on A*STAR role

NUS Vice President (University and Global Relations) Professor Andrew Wee has been appointed Deputy Managing Director, Research by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) with effect from 1 October.

As Deputy Managing Director, Research, Prof Wee will be pivotal in coordinating the work between A*STAR’s Biomedical Research Council and the Science and Engineering Research Council. His responsibilities will include attracting and retaining scientific talent, reviewing scientific policies and processes, as well as overseeing scientific shared services.

Said Prof Wee, “I am delighted at the opportunity to work even more closely with the A*STAR research community and grow inter-disciplinary relationships, as well as to strengthen A*STAR’s ties with other collaborators from enterprise and industry. A*STAR is a key pillar of Singapore’s innovation landscape, and I hope to build on its excellent research foundation for growth and success in future.”

Prof Wee’s A*STAR appointment will be concurrent with his present role as Vice President (University and Global Relations) where he focuses on strengthening the University’s strategic relations with local and overseas stakeholders. Prior to this role, Prof Wee was also Dean of NUS Science from April 2007 to March 2014. He is also currently President of the Singapore National Academy of Science, Director of the Surface Science Laboratory at NUS Physics, and an adjunct scientist at A*STAR’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering.
