Top in Asia

NUS has risen two ranks to 24th place in the most recent THE World University rankings, and maintains its place as the top Asian university

NUS has risen two notches to the 24th spot in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2016–2017 — the University’s best performance to date. The only Asian university in the top 25 list, it also secured its position as Asia’s top institution for the second year running.

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said, “We are pleased that NUS continues to do well in global university rankings, in particular to advance two places to 24th worldwide and maintain our position as Asia’s top university in the latest THE World University Rankings. NUS will continue to focus on nurturing future-ready graduates, pursuing research excellence, and creating strong translational impact and real-world value from our research.”

This year, THE has published an expanded World University Rankings comprising 980 universities from 79 countries, representing about five per cent of the world’s higher education institutions. This included 289 Asian universities from 24 countries, of which 19 universities were in the top 200 in the rankings.

THE employs 13 calibrated performance indicators to reflect a university’s strengths in five areas — teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income. These five areas represent the core missions of research intensive universities.

Mr Phil Baty, Editor of THE World University Rankings, said THE’s World University Rankings are the most comprehensive and the most robust global university rankings, and that “the data clearly demonstrates that National University of Singapore is the number one university in Asia”.

“The fact that NUS has been able to strengthen its leading position, and move closer to the very top of the table, is testament to its extraordinary leadership and vision, backed by a commitment to true internationalisation and serious investment and support from Government,” he added.
