Commentary: Amid urban sprawl, China builds ‘sponge cities’ to soak up heavy rainfall

Distinguished Visiting Prof Asit K Biswas from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS, and Dr Kris Hartley, lecturer from the Department of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University shared that while engineering solutions are popular interventions, cities cannot simply pipe away flood risks. They discussed China’s “sponge city initiative” which makes use of permeable surfaces and green infrastructures to reduce flooding and enhance water supply security.
