Prof Wang Gungwu, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS and Chairman of the East Asian Institute at NUS, argues in the book The Eurasian Core And Its Edges: Dialogues With Wang Gungwu that China's assertiveness in the South China Sea is just its way of playing catch-up with the maritime powers of the United States and Britain today.
